Ford Motor Company, executive chairman, Bill Ford, announces the automakers new BlueOval Battery Park

MARSHALL, MI - Ford Motor Company has announced plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in Marshall, Michigan. With an investment of $3.5 billion, this plant will employ around 2,500 people by 2026. The subsidiary, called BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, is part of Ford’s $50 billion push to lead the EV revolution. The company is the first automaker to commit to building nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the US, which will help diversify its US supply chain. This will make EVs more accessible and affordable to customers.

LFP batteries are very durable and use fewer high-demand, high-cost materials. They will power a range of Ford’s next-generation affordable EV passenger vehicles and trucks, which are currently under development. The introduction of LFP batteries will allow Ford to produce more EVs and offer more choices to new EV customers. Ford’s electric vehicle lineup has generated huge demand, and this new battery plant will help it to deliver on customer orders more quickly.

Ford plans to offer LFP batteries as a second battery chemistry, alongside NCM, which will allow customers to choose a battery that aligns with their needs. Ford is working to deliver an annual run rate of 600,000 electric vehicles globally by the end of this year and 2 million globally by the end of 2026 as part of its Ford+ plan.

This all-new battery production facility in Michigan will add approximately 35 gigawatt hours per year of new battery capacity for Ford in the US. This capacity will be capable of powering approximately 400,000 future Ford EVs. The new battery plant will diversify and localize Ford’s battery supply chain in the countries where it builds EVs, which will improve availability and affordability for customers while strengthening consumer demand.

Ford and its battery tech collaborators have announced $17.6 billion in investment in EV and battery production in the US since 2019, leading to more than 18,000 direct jobs in the US and over 100,000 indirect jobs. The company's new battery plant is part of its commitment to American manufacturing. This generational investment by an American icon will uplift local families, small businesses, and the entire community and help the state of Michigan continue leading the future of mobility and electrification.
