Discover the surprising history of this historic Kalamazoo building and its pivotal role in the city’s economy and manufacturing legacy.

Having lived in Kalamazoo for 40 years, I’ve watched many historic places fade away. But learning about the past helps us appreciate the present. Some buildings are more than just old structures—they hold stories of the businesses and industries that shaped our city.

One such building stands at the corner of Alcott and Fulford in the Edison neighborhood. I’ve passed it countless times, but one day, the faded name across the top caught my attention, and I decided to dig deeper.

Most people associate Kalamazoo with Gibson Guitars, Pfizer, or Bell’s Brewery. But what many don’t realize is that the city was once a major hub for Masonic regalia manufacturing.

In 1869, the Ihling Brothers Everard Company was founded, producing ceremonial regalia for Masonic and fraternal organizations across the country. Their craftsmanship was highly respected, and their products were sought after nationwide. For over a century, they provided jobs and played a key role in Kalamazoo’s economy, much like the city’s other legendary businesses.

“This historic space continues to serve the community, just in a different way.”

Despite their long success, the company closed in 1995, marking the end of an era. The building, however, still stands and has taken on a new purpose. Today, it houses businesses like Worship Arts and the Kalamazoo Ballroom Academy, bringing new life to a structure that once played a vital role in the city's industrial past. Instead of sitting vacant, this historic space continues to serve the community, just in a different way.

Kalamazoo isn’t just a city with a rich history; it’s a place full of opportunity, culture, and growth. From historic neighborhoods and thriving local businesses to nationally recognized schools and a strong sense of community, it’s a great place to call home.
